Esperanza wanted her life to go back to the way it was before her father died, but her uncles are trying to take over her family's life, so Esperanza and her mother to flee to California. Then Esperanza struggles with her new and challenging life but eventually finds strength within herself.
While I didn't particularly like Esperanza at the beginning of the book (I found her childishness and petulance really irritating at times), I loved seeing how she changed and grew throughout the story. Ms. Ryan also did a great job, in my opinion. of painting vivid pictures with words so I could make a movie in my head of the story. I LOVE that.
