Today was all about different strategies for summarizing materials. We started with a quick review of chapters 11 - 13 from A Single Shard. Between yesterday and today we had read and coded all three of those chapters with our blue pens. The first part of class today was spent reviewing those parts of the chapters that we already coded and determining whether they needed further explanation.
We talked about the purpose of being able to summarize - it helps us remember the stories and it helps us share stories with others. But being able to summarize non-fiction helps us notice important details and learn more about different topics. This comes in especially handy when we're working on research ... which, coincidentally, is JUST what we're about to start doing!
We practiced a simple technique for capturing the essence of a paragraph, article, book, etc. We will continue to practice and try out other strategies in the coming weeks as the research project gets underway.
Homework: Choose any part of the review activities in the vocabulary book and work on them for fifteen to twenty minutes. Choose the activities you think will help YOU best prepare for the vocabulary test on Monday.
